The quintessential entrepreneur, Anthony Mazlish saw a need and filled it. A sufferer of back pain, he went from store to store, seeking furniture and other products to ease his discomfort, to no avail. In 1994, he opened his own specialty retail establishment of high-end comfort and ergonomic furniture and other products. Healthy Back Store in Rockville, Maryland, became so successful, the founder subsequently expanded to 22 locations in 6 states, including California, Colorado, North Carolina, and Kentucky. Already the country’s largest privately owned back firm, Healthy Back Store continues to grow, with existing establishments remaining current through remodeling or restyling.
From mattresses to office chairs, recliners, foot massagers, and beyond, the specialty retailer has eased the pain of untold customers. The latest products include the Estasi Bed by Technogel, the TEMPUR-Traditional Pillow by Tempur-Pedic Management Inc., the Jobri BetterPosture Jazzy Kneeling Chair, and the Airtouch Height-Adjustable Table. Healthy Back Store also puts out its own products, such as SleepSystem mattresses, the Ergo Recliner, and the Healthy Back Travel Set and Office Pack. The upscale inventory ranges from major respected name brands such as Tempur-Pedic to small specialty manufacturers. The company also sells books, such as Healing Back Pain: The Mindbody Prescription by Dr. John Sarno, and DVDs.
Anthony Mazlish, the company’s CEO, and Steve Urban, Healthy Back Store’s President and COO, embrace change in the interest of making the stores better and hold contests to drive interest. For one such event, the retailer gave away a 10-inch queen set SleepSystem and two of the store’s signature Back Neck Pillows, for a total value of $1,500. The executives remain on the lookout for motivated individuals seeking challenging employment or a career change to the retail sector. The company trains all sales personnel rigorously in the science and art of ergonomics and does not hire on a commission basis, ensuring the staff sells customers only the products they need to increase their level of comfort.
